I was introduced to the construction industry at a very young age. My father is a highly skilled finish contractor who has been at this trade for over 50 years. Many of my childhood years were spent in his workshop, so it was only natural that I also followed in his trade. I was given a piece of wood with nails and a hammer to play with often and many of my youngest memories are of time spent with him in his shop. I learned the ways of the trade watching him. The precision and detail that goes into finish work pairs well with my slightly OCD tendencies of perfection. I tend to be much more critical of my work than even my clients which has helped contribute to building the reputation I have worked so hard for.
Throughout my 20’s and during the recession, I found work where I could and because of this I was exposed to a lot of different trades. I was the head carpenter for a local cabinet company for a few years as well. During this time was when I knew I wanted to go out on my own. I was running the jobs from start to finish and knew I was ready to build a business of my own. It also happens that quite a few of my longtime friends are also contractors so I pretty much already had a team built without much effort.
My big break came when I was introduced to the owner of CrossFit, Greg Glassman, and was contracted to build him multiple custom furniture pieces for his home here in San Luis Obispo. Things quickly grew from there. I also met my wife during this time, who is a Realtor, but who had also been flipping properties for a few years. We started to collaborate on projects together and I came up with a quick and affordable process for completing remodels.
I formed relationships with other contractors to make my jobs run smoothly and found the right connections to suppliers who provide high quality products at reasonable pricing. This allows me to complete projects quicker than most contractors could and still be able to stay within my clients budgets. These days I take on projects of all shapes and sizes.
Something that sets me apart is that I always make sure my clients are happy when I finish a job and that I back my work 100%. My clients often contract me for additional projects, along with referrals has gotten me to this point in my business. In fact, last year, my company completed over $1,500,000 worth of renovations and am on target to double that figure in 2016, despite that I don’t advertise and I don’t try to rush through as many jobs as possible for the biggest return. Almost every client I have ever met has had a bad experience with a contractor at some point. I take it on myself to show them what a good contractor can do and how smoothly the process can go, no matter how big or small the job.
